FAQ

Q: What is fencing?

A: Fencing originates from the techniques of dueling and self-defense developed in Europe during the Middle Ages. The modern sport developed in the 19th century with the establishment of standardized rules and equipment and became an Olympic sport in 1896. Since then, sport fencing has evolved into a highly athletic, technical, and strategic game enjoyed by athletes worldwide.

Q: What are the benefits?

A: Fencing is a sport that requires a combination of athletic and mental endurance, discipline, and creativity. In addition to getting a great workout, fencers will think critically about how to use their footwork and bladework to "solve the puzzle" of each opponent—it's a great mental exercise that has benefits both on and off the fencing piste.

Q: What about tournaments? Will I/my child get to compete?

A: Tournaments are a wonderful way to test your skill development over the course of your fencing season and career! Students will have many opportunities throughout the year to learn about and practice for competition during in-house tournaments. All of our fencers are encouraged to compete at the local level as soon as they are interested.

Renard Fencing Academy is an official club of USA Fencing, the national organization that hosts all domestic Regional, Youth, and National fencing tournaments. Each year, our fencers, their families, and our coaches will attend various Regional tournaments throughout the season, with students aiming to earn enough points to qualify for Summer Nationals in July.

Q: Does it hurt to get hit?

A: Getting "hit" is a natural part of fencing—after all, it's how you score! However, it's important to note that in fencing, we don't score "hits", we score "touches" (hence "touché"). A high-quality fencing touch is never harmful or particularly painful. That said, yes, you might get a bruise or two at practice, but the many pieces of protective gear that we wear in fencing make it an extremely safe sport as long as you observe the rules of engagement and club safety policies.

Q: When and where should I purchase equipment?

A: Our club is proud to provide equipment—including masks, gloves, jackets, and chest protectors—for new and beginner students. We recommend waiting to purchase personal equipment until a student has formed a preference for their weapon and decided to commit to regular attendance of either the Foil or Sabre Program.
